Opioid Addiction Statistics in South Florida

Florida’s Bureau of Vital Statistics reported 230,911 deaths in the state in a single year. Of the 31,604 deaths investigated by medical examiners, drugs were present in 12,687 cases. The vast majority of those deaths involved more than one substance.

Total drug-related deaths decreased by 14% compared to the prior year. Opioid-related deaths dropped by 26%, with 5,378 reported. Opioid-caused deaths fell even further, down 32% to 3,726.

But thousands of people are still dying every year. Fentanyl remains a significant driver of those deaths, with data indicating that at least 85% of fentanyl occurrences involved illicitly obtained supply. For families in South Florida, the crisis is far from over.

Understanding Opioid Use Disorder

Opioids include a range of substances. Some are prescribed, such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, and morphine. Others, like heroin and illicitly manufactured fentanyl, are obtained outside of medical settings.

All opioids work by binding to receptors in the brain and body. They reduce pain and produce feelings of warmth and calm.

With repeated use, the brain adapts. It produces less of its own natural pain-relieving chemicals. It needs the opioid just to feel normal.

Withdrawal from opioids is intensely uncomfortable. Symptoms can include severe muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, sweating, insomnia, and anxiety. This physical dependency makes stopping on one’s own very difficult and sometimes dangerous.

Opioid Addiction Treatment Programs in Fort Lauderdale

James Club Treatment Center offers a full range of outpatient programs for opioid addiction in Fort Lauderdale and the surrounding Broward County area.

  • Continuum of Care Program: Our most comprehensive offering. This long-term program guides clients through clinical treatment, structured sober living, and the transition to independent life. Built for people who are serious about lasting change.
  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): Intensive, structured programming during the day. PHP provides a high level of clinical support without overnight residential care. A strong option for those in the early stages of recovery.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Multiple clinical sessions per week, designed for clients who need meaningful treatment while maintaining work, family, or school commitments.
  • Outpatient Rehab (OP): A lower-intensity level of care for clients who have stabilized and are building independence in their recovery.
  • Sober Living: Safe, structured housing for clients in recovery. Sober living supports long-term sobriety by keeping clients in a substance-free environment during and after treatment.
  • Mentoring Program: Personalized one-on-one mentorship from someone with lived recovery experience. Mentors provide accountability, guidance, and hope.

How Is Opioid Addiction Treated?

Opioid addiction responds well to a combination of clinical therapy and community support. At James Club, treatment is individualized. No two people arrive at the same place or for the same reasons.

Our approach to opioid addiction treatment includes:

  • Individual Therapy: Private sessions with a clinician to explore the roots of opioid use, build coping strategies, and work through underlying challenges such as trauma, grief, or anxiety.
  • Group Therapy: Structured sessions with peers in recovery. Group work reduces isolation and builds a sense of shared accountability.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): An evidence-based approach that helps clients identify and reshape the thoughts and patterns that drive opioid use.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Skills-focused therapy for managing intense emotions, tolerating distress, and improving relationships.
  • Holistic Therapy: Wellness-based practices that support the whole person, including mindfulness, stress reduction, and movement.
  • 12-Step Programming: A structured, community-centered framework for building long-term recovery.

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) may also be part of a client’s care depending on their clinical needs. We coordinate with prescribing providers to ensure each client receives appropriate medical support.

Why James Club Recovery?

James Club was founded by Ray Rapaglia, who built this program on the foundation of his own recovery. That matters.

We are Joint Commission accredited and NARR certified. Our programs meet rigorous national standards for safety and clinical quality.

But credentials only go so far. What defines James Club is the culture. We believe in integrity, accountability, and grace. We walk alongside our clients. We hold people to high standards and support them when they struggle.

We also believe in long-term recovery. Thirty days is a beginning. Our Continuum of Care Program exists because we know that real, lasting sobriety takes time, structure, and sustained support.

Our 7 S's to Success

The 7 S’s to Success are a framework James Club uses to help clients build the foundation for permanent sobriety.

Inspired by the original AA program of 1935, these are the tools we believe lead to a purposeful, sober life:

  1. Sponsor/Mentor: A personal guide to help navigate your recovery journey.
  2. Schedule: A structured weekly routine including meetings, study, and worship.
  3. Support Group: Ten individuals with quality clean time offering encouragement and accountability.
  4. Shelter/Homegroup: A committed community of like-minded people you belong to and show up for.
  5. Service Commitment: Giving back through volunteer work and sponsorship of others.
  6. Step Work and Spirituality: Learning life skills and unblocking your relationship with a higher power.
  7. Spiritual Director/Accountability Partner: Someone who helps deepen your spiritual life and teaches you how to pray.

These seven elements work together. Each one reinforces the others. Together, they create a recovery that holds.
