Florida’s Bureau of Vital Statistics reported 230,911 deaths in the state in a single year. Of the 31,604 deaths investigated by medical examiners, drugs were present in 12,687 cases. The vast majority of those deaths involved more than one substance.
Total drug-related deaths decreased by 14% compared to the prior year. Opioid-related deaths dropped by 26%, with 5,378 reported. Opioid-caused deaths fell even further, down 32% to 3,726.
But thousands of people are still dying every year. Fentanyl remains a significant driver of those deaths, with data indicating that at least 85% of fentanyl occurrences involved illicitly obtained supply. For families in South Florida, the crisis is far from over.
Opioids include a range of substances. Some are prescribed, such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, and morphine. Others, like heroin and illicitly manufactured fentanyl, are obtained outside of medical settings.
All opioids work by binding to receptors in the brain and body. They reduce pain and produce feelings of warmth and calm.
With repeated use, the brain adapts. It produces less of its own natural pain-relieving chemicals. It needs the opioid just to feel normal.
Withdrawal from opioids is intensely uncomfortable. Symptoms can include severe muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, sweating, insomnia, and anxiety. This physical dependency makes stopping on one’s own very difficult and sometimes dangerous.
James Club Treatment Center offers a full range of outpatient programs for opioid addiction in Fort Lauderdale and the surrounding Broward County area.
